The Crowning of Miss Mum is open to all Bristol, Forestville, Wolcott, Terryville and Burlington
girls who are between the ages of 14 and 17 years old as of the night of the event (September 24th, 2010).
The first 20 applications received will be accepted. Miss Mum 2010 will appear at all of the Mum Festival
activities as the Hostess of the Bristol Mum Festival. She also makes appearances throughout the year at
Bristol activities such as the Home Show, local parades, Bristol Library, Imagine Nation, etc. Upon
receipt of an application, an e-mail will be sent to the contestants. There will be a meeting of all
contestants with at least one parent or guardian (a date yet to be set). At this time contestants will
receive a rehearsal schedule, with approximately 5 rehearsals with our choreographer. Rehearsals are for
the opening number (which is not judged – for entertainment purposes only) and for instructions on walking
in formal wear, appearance wear and the correct way to sit and speak during your on-stage interview.
The contestants are also given a fact sheet. This sheet is what we call “All About Me”. The
information from these sheets is used by our Host to come up with the questions for their on-stage
interview. Questions like nickname, how you got it, age, grade, siblings, interests, future goals, etc.
are the basis of most of the information we’re collecting. This leaves no surprise questions for the
on-stage interview portion of the evening. The girls will be talking about themselves and that makes them
a little more relaxed on stage.
The contestants also receive a “My Favorite Things” sheet which can also be used during the
on-stage portion of the evening.
There is an essay which is judged by a separate panel of judges from those the night of the event. The
essay topic will be given to the girls at the parent meeting and will be due at the rehearsal two weeks
before the event. The contestant number is the only thing to identify the contestant – her name is not on
the essay.
There is no swimsuit, no talent, and no evening gown competitions as part of the Crowning of Miss
Mum. The girls will appear in “appearance wear” which they will choose themselves as something they would
wear to an appearance in the City as Miss Mum. They will appear in “interview apparel” which is a little
more dressy than the appearance wear. We do not allow strapless dresses or gowns. This particular ensemble
should be something age appropriate and something the young lady might wear out to a special dinner event
with your family. This is the outfit they will be interviewed on stage.
There is a pop question to see their spontaneous answers to questions developed in advance. We
usually try to stay away from politics and religion to keep the questions fair across the board!
The girls will make a scarecrow (directions will be provided) which we will use in our “People’s
Choice” fundraiser at the event. The scarecrows will be used to decorate our float for the Mum Festival
Parade (September 26th). We would like to have all contestants on the float. If the majority of the
contestants do not want to be on the Miss Mum Court float, it may be changed to Miss Mum and her
runner-ups. Each girl works hard during the competition and we would love to have them all partipate!
Because of the generosity of several Bristol merchants, we have been able to give gift cards to all
the girls who participate. We are hopeful that we will be able to continue this tradition again this year,
but cannot guarantee that this will happen.
