| From: Bob Zetnick, Saturday, September 12, 2009 5:21:19 PM I don''t know if the date matters to anyone, but the Mum-A-Thon was started in 1970, not 1969. My dad, Don Zetnick, started the race that year and I made the shirt numbers with brown marker on beige paper. He had started running in 1967 to help him lose weight and running became a passion for him. He and my brother, D.J. ran the first race. We moved to Texas in 1972, but my dad, D.J. and another brother, David, came back to Bristol to run the race again in 1975. Our family has always had fond memories of living in Bristol for the five years we were there and the mum fields were always beautiful blooming in the fall! Anyway, thought you might want to know of my dad and his association with the race. Where From: Bristol, Ct. | From: Brenda Phoenix, Tuesday, August 28, 2007 12:11:55 PM I have the best memories growing up next to the Bristol Nursery. Every fall the chrysanthemums were spectacular. The fields were like a patch work quilt with it''s brilliant color. As kids we would sit on my mother''s front porch watching all the people coming to view and purchase chrysanthemums of every size, shape, and color. With all the varieties and colors back then, it was hard to choose which ones to take home. If you didn''t see a potted one you liked, you could go into the field and dig your own. I would be curious every year wondering what the Nursery float would turn out to be. I remember one year it was a VW car completely covered with chrysanthemum heads to make it look like a lady bug. What a beautiful and cool looking float! Going to the parade was just as fun. The number of floats were innumerable and everyone tried to out do each other with design and colored flower coordination. The floats were spectacular back then. I would love to see the parade get back to what the Mum Festival was all about, the beautiful chrysanthemum flower and what this festival was named for. Remember "Mums the word"! Being in the Bristol Eastern High Band was the highlight of my high school years, and marching in the Mum Parade was something I will never forget. I was able to do it for four years. The last parade I was at was in 1971, I watched every band and float that went by and my son (age 11 months ) slept through his first parade. He now goes every year and takes my grandchildren. Another generation of Mum parade lovers. Good Luck with this year, and I hope to be able to get down there before long. It has changed a lot since 1960''s but I still miss it. Email: bjhenry@tds.net Where From: Athens, Maine raised in Bristol | From: PAT SAVINO, Wednesday, July 05, 2006 6:54:49 AM I, like most people have the fondest memories of the Mum Festival Parade. It was a great kick-off to the fall season. I lived at the top of Willis St. and usually sat at the bottom. I feel like my family holds a part of the history of the parade. My father, Vincent, played in the fife and drum core, my bother David plyed in the Bristol Highschool Band, and I was Miss OSIA in 1974. I was positioned close to the end of the parade because I was in a pony pulled cart (I''m sure no body wanted to walk through what was left behind). I have been away from Bristol now for 20 years (relocated to Florida),however this September my mother and I have planned a trip back to Bristol to see the family and the Mum Parade in particular. I have to say, ever since I started to get more and more involved in the community, weather it is Singing the National Amthem at a community event or putting on a huge production to benefit the city of Bristol, it never ceases to amaze me just how lucky I truely am to be part of such an amazing community. I look around and see just how much Bristol has to offer, and in doing that I see all of the hard work and the comming togeather of so many people and organizations to make Bristol this great place. The Mum Festival plays a vital part in this. Keeping the spirit of Bristol alive and preservig it is just what the Mum Commitie and Festival do/does. I''ve been going to the parades in between and I get so antsy just watching. I love seeing the floats and especially watching the people, especially the childrens'', expressions as the band goes by. The memories of those years are still very strong and my latest performances in this event have strengthened those memories. People like Bob Bailey should be extremely proud of their continued involvement in this event. All of those involved in the planning and organizing of this annual event should, also, be very proud. You all, continue, to uphold a, true, Connecticut Tradition and I look forward to many additional performances in your annual event. The spectators are very supportive and the applause from them is, always, non-stop. Thanks for the opportunities and thanks for the overwhelming applause. Your parade event is one of my favorites. In closing. A big thank you to Mr. Ron for giving everyone an outstanding photo gallery archive. Best wishes for 2003. Thanking you: Frank Zappone - Naugatuck, Connecticut "The fellow they call, THE LONE DRUMMER."
Where From: Naugatuck, Connecticut | From: Carol (Vona) Farfaglia, Thursday, September 26, 2002 5:44:59 PM Parades were always a big part of family life in the 60''s and 70''s. I am so happy that I got to see what I know as the best parade ever - The Mum Festival Parade! Mom and Dad would take us kids and we''d sit on the curb and wait for what seemed like an eternity for the parade to pass us. We''d eat peanuts and cotton candy and if we were really lucky, we''d get a balloon. The only time I was actually in the parade was when ESPN had a float back in ''85. As employees, we walked along side the float handing out bumper stickers and buttons to parade goers along the route. People were so happy to get these items and we were happy to be part of this wonderful event. I have since moved from Bristol, but I have brought my children to see the parade. They love the fire engines, old cars and the "army guys". I love to hear the high school marching bands. I may have moved away, but my heart will always be in Bristol every time the parade passes through downtown.
Where From: Wilton, NY | From: Beverly Foote, Friday, September 06, 2002 10:15:59 PM Many of my memories are marching in the parade with Carey''s Senior Drum Corps and other Junior Corps I had belonged to. I remember one-year Carey''s Senior got together to march for my fathers Bob Bailey''s 50th year in Drum Corps and it started raining and we still marched the entire parade even though we all got soaked. There where still many people out watching the parade and stayed to the very end which shows how much the parade means to the spectators and marchers. I am now on the Mum Festival Committee. I have served as General Chairman and I am now serving as Parade Chairman. It is great when going to the beginning of the parade an seeing many people putting out there lawn chairs or blankets to save a place to watch the Parade. It has also been great going up to the Farms the follow weekend after the Parade. I remember last year it was very cold an we still had many people come to the Farms this shows that the people really enjoy what is going on at the Farms and the Car Show which is on Sunday Email: woofdog1@earthlink.net Personal Url: http://bristolct.net & //bristolmumfestival.org Where From: Bristol, Ct. | From: Dina Mazzone, Tuesday, September 03, 2002 4:10:51 PM Growing up off of Willis Street, we always brought our chairs down across from Memorial Boulevard School early in the morning and walked down to the parade in the afternoon. I have memories of marching with Bristol Central High school in days that were hot and others that were rainy - the parade goes on! It''s a pleasure to watch my daughter in the parade - this year will be her fifth (I think) with the Dance Arts Centre. Watching generation after generation enjoy this annual event is always a pleasure. It would always give me a thrill on Parade Day to drive the Parade route at about nine in the morning to see the many chairs and umbrellas set up along the route. It showed me how much the people in Bristol look forward to the Parade. With the addition of the Farms Weekend, it has made the Mum festival even better. I hope that it continues for another forty yars.
| From: Linda Lubrico, Tuesday, August 13, 2002 10:14:22 PM Many of my memories of the parade are as a child watching the parade go by, then as a memeber of the New Britain Pal Drill Team later marching in the Color Guard as a member of Carey''s Senior Drum Corps. It always amazed me the amount of people that were watching the parade. A few years back we got Carey''s back for a special tribute to Bob Bailey on his 50th year in Drum Corps. It started raining that day and by the time we finished marching we were soaked from head to toe as we marched there were still may people who stayed till the end of parade that just shows me how much the parade means to the specators and marchers. I have been going to the Mum parade and enjoying the festivities for many many years. However, the best years have been the past 9 years or so. I have grand children now and see the festival in a whole different light. The children love the Minor''s Farm weekend during the festival time along with the parade and amusements of course. It is a real family affair- sometimes we have as many as 15 famly members going to the parade and to the farm. On the weekend day we go to the farm we ride the hay wagon, pick the apples and the kids run through the farm making sure they see everything there is to see and do everything they can do - then home to grandma''s house for a chili dinner that has been in the cockpot since early morning. What wonderful memories for me and hopefully for my grandchildren someday. I remember my sister and I walking out the of the store and sitting on the curb as the parade marched by. Now, 40 years later, I watch my four children sitting on the curb watching the parade march by. And, maybe many years from now I will be watching my children watch their children...... Parades are wonderful! See you there! Email: ronald.tessman@bristolct.net Personal Url: http://BristolCt.net Where From: Bristol, CT! |
